Hungary loses to Switzerland in Euro 2024 opener
Vargas' header not enough to salvage draw
Swiss take early lead and hold on for victory
Budapest, Hungary - The Hungary national football team suffered a disappointing defeat in their opening match of Euro 2024, losing 2-1 to Switzerland at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.
The Swiss took an early lead through Breel Embolo in the 18th minute, and doubled their advantage just before half-time with a goal from Xherdan Shaqiri.
Hungary pulled one back in the second half through a header from Barnabás Vargas, but it was not enough to salvage a draw.
The defeat leaves Hungary bottom of Group A after the first round of matches.
