Hungary Injury Update

Hungary's Varga pays tribute to injured teammate

Doctors awaiting update on Varga's condition after suffering serious injury during match

The Hungarian Football Association said Varga suffered several broken facial bones after colliding with an opponent during the match.

Hungary players paid tribute to their injured teammate Barnabas Varga after he was stretchered off the pitch during their Euro 2024 qualifier against Germany on Thursday.

Varga, 25, was involved in a collision with German defender Antonio Rudiger in the 15th minute and was left unconscious on the field. He was taken to hospital, where he is now in a stable condition.

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai called for a change to medical protocols after the match, saying that Varga should have been taken off the pitch sooner.

"I think the medical staff should have acted quicker," Szoboszlai said. "He was clearly unconscious and there was a lot of blood on the pitch. I think he should have been taken off the pitch immediately."

The Hungarian Football Association said in a statement that Varga suffered several broken bones in his face, including his cheekbone and nose. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days.

"We are all very concerned about Barnabas," Szoboszlai said. "He is a great player and a great friend. We are all hoping for a speedy recovery."

Hungary lost the match 2-0, but the result was overshadowed by Varga's injury.
